Richard Shirley was buried in Lille Southern Cemetery which was in German hands throughout the war so it is likely that he died as a prisoner of war but if so there is not, as yet, any information to confirm this. The 2nd Cornwall Light Infantry battalion was part of 82 Brigade, 27th Division which had been holding the line around Ypres since arriving on the Western Front in December 1914. |
